The killing of infants is found throughout the animal kingdom and throughout human history. Human infanticide has occurred for reasons of population control, sacrificial ritual, eugenics, political pogroms, and altruism. The act is often legally distinguished from murder, with maternal perpetrators frequently treated with leniency. Ethically, it may be indistinguishable from abortion.
