Mania and dysregulation in goal pursuit: a review

Abstract: This paper reviews evidence for deficits in goal regulation in bipolar disorder. A series of authors have described mania as related to higher accomplishment, elevated achievement motivation, and ambitious goal setting. These characteristics appear to be evident outside of episodes, and to some extent, among family members of people with a history of mania. In addition, people with a history of mania demonstrate intense mood reactivity, particularly in response to success and reward. During positive moods, the… Show more

“…In fact, depressive and manic states in BD associated to atypical functional hemispheric asymmetries are thought to involve dysregulation of the behavioral approach system (Depue and Iacono, 1989;Fowles, 1993;Johnson, 2005). This system is assumed to regulate appetitive motivation and goal-directed behavior in response to signals of reward (Gray, 2001), predicting left prefrontal functional hemispheric asymmetry during mania.…”

“…The currently dominant theoretical view is that mania reflects a hyperreactive approach system (Depue & Iacono, 1989;Fowles, 1993;Johnson, 2005). Consistent with this, one symptom of mania is euphoria, an affect unambiguously linked to approach.…”

“…The objective of the BAS is to regulate appetitive motivation and goal-directed behavior to obtain rewards and/or avoid punishment. Researchers have highlighted the act of goal striving as a prototypic life event that turns on the BAS in humans (Depue, Luciana, Arbisi, Collins, & Leon, 1994;Johnson, 2005). Depue et al (1987;Depue & Iacono, 1989) proposed a BAS dysregulation theory of bipolar disorder.…”
