Forest carbon stocks-both in terms of the standing biomass and the soil organic carbon (OC)-were monitored in the mangrove plantation reforested from an abandoned shrimp pond for the 10 years following land excavation. Excavation to a level of 25 cm below the existing ground level increased the inundation time of tidal water from 463 to 7,597 hours per year, resulting in a significant increase of survival/growth rates for planted mangrove species, Rhizophora mucronata (RM) and Bruguiera cylindrica (BC), and of carbon stocks as well. RM showed high rates of standing biomass accumulation with 98.7 ton/ha while 28.8 ton/ha for BC was measured over 10 years in the excavated area. In contrast, the unexcavated area showed low rates of biomass accumulation, 1.04 ton/ha for RM and 0.53 ton/ha for BC in the same period. The excavated area recorded a twofold increase of soil OC in the upper 5 cm of the surface soil from 71.8 to 154.8 ton/ha in 10 years, however it decreased to 68.3 ton/ha in the unexcavated area where soil OC is susceptible to decomposition. These results imply that the potential of carbon sinks in reforested land from abandoned areas cannot be developed unless hydraulic conditions are properly recovered. The fast growing species Avicennia marina (AM) grew quickly for the first two years after colonization but its growth slowed down afterwards, showing a limited ability of carbon capture.

The carbon (C) concentration and flux, as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC) and macrodetritus (MD), were quantified through 4 tidal cycles in a mangrove tidal creek in Southeastern Brazil. DOC was the major fraction of the total C concentration, accounting for 68 and 61% of the total C concentration during ebb and flood periods respectively. Concentrations of DOC (Ebb = 3,41 ± 0,57 mgC.L -1 and Flood = 3,55 ± 0,76 mgC.L ) were relatively similar during the four tidal cycles. Macrodetritus presented a wide variation with concentration peaks probably related to external forces, such as winds, which enrich the ebb flow with leaf litter. DOC and POC fluxes depended primarily on tidal and net water fluxes, whereas MD fluxes were not. The magnitude of the DOC and POC fluxes varied with the area flooded at high tide, but not the MD fluxes. DOC was the major form of carbon export to Sepetiba Bay. During the four tidal cycles, the forest exported a total of 1,2 kg of organic carbon per ha, mostly as DOC (60%), followed by POC (22%) and MD (18%).Keywords: dissolved organic carbon, macrodetritus, mangrove tidal creek, particulate organic carbon. Flutuações diurnas do carbono orgânico em um canal de maré na Baía de Sepetiba, SE Brasil ResumoAs concentrações e fluxos de carbono orgânico sob forma de carbono orgânico dissolvido (COD), carbono orgânico particulado (COP) e macrodetritos (MD) foram quantificadas durante 4 ciclos de maré em canal de maré na Floresta Experimental de Itacuruçá, Baía de Sepetiba, RJ, litoral sudeste do Brasil. COD foi a fração mais importante para a concentração total de carbono orgânico, contribuindo com 68 e 61% da concentração total de C nos períodos de maré vazante e enchente, respectivamente. As concentrações de COD (vazante = 3.41 ± 0.57 mgC.L -1 e enchente = 3.55 ± 0.76 mgC.L ) foram similares durante os 4 ciclos de maré. A fração macrodetritos apresentou uma ampla variabilidade com máximos de concentração relacionados a fatores externos como ventos, que enriqueceram as águas de vazante com macrodetritos. A magnitude dos fluxos de COD e COP, mas não os de macrodetritos, relacionaram-se com os fluxos de água e a conseqüente área inundada pela maré. A fração COD foi a mais importante forma de exportação de carbono orgânico pelo manguezal. Durante os 4 ciclos monitorados, a floresta exportou um total de 1.2 kg de carbono orgânico, 60% sob forma de COD, seguido pelo COP (22%) e pela fração macrodetritos (18%).Palavras-chave: carbono orgânico dissolvido, macrodetritos, carbono orgânico particulado, manguezais.

ResumoA análise de bacias de drenagem, combinada com dados de sensoriamento remoto e cartográfi cos, fornece informações signifi cantes para o reconhecimento de lineamentos morfoestruturais e para a detecção de feições tectônicas com expressão na paisagem atual. Este procedimento foi aplicado no estudo de três bacias de drenagem do leste da Ilha do Marajó, correspondentes aos rios Arari, Camará e Paracauari. Todas estas bacias mostram evidências de anomalias morfoestruturais, incluindo-se principalmente: mudanças rápidas no padrão de drenagem dentro de uma mesma bacia, variando de treliça, retangular, multibacinal a subparalelo; canais retilíneos comumente conectados em ângulos retos; canais fortemente sinuosos que se tornam retilíneos; meandros localizados; e bacias altamente assimétricas. Anomalias de drenagem, consistindo em frequentes desvios de direção formando ângulos retos e meandros isolados e comprimidos, são também reconhecidas na paleodrenagem preservada neste setor da ilha. Com base na densidade dos lineamentos estruturais, pode-se reconhecer dois compartimentos morfoestruturais. O compartimento I é localizado na porção centro-leste da área de estudo, onde ocorre densidade de lineamento alta com duas direções preferenciais para NW-SE e NE-SW. O compartimento II, correspondente ao restante da área, apresenta densidade de lineamentos variando entre muito baixa a média e com orientação principal para NE-SW. As características morfoestruturais dos sistemas de drenagem atual e pretérita permitem sugerir área com forte controle tectônico. A deformação tectônica pode refl etir reativação de falhas de direções principais NW-SE e NE-SW, melhor registradas no compartimento I. AbstractAnalysis of drainage basins combining remote sensing and cartographic data provides signifi cant information for the recognition of morphostructural lineaments and for the detection of tectonic features expressed in the modern landscape. This approach was applied to study three drainage basins from eastern Marajó Island, corresponding to the Arari, Camará and Paracauari rivers. These basins show evidence of morphostructural anomalies, mainly including: rapid changes in patterns that range from trellis, rectangular, multibasin to sub-parallel; channels that are connected in straight angles; rapid changes from highly sinuous to straight channels; localized meandering; and highly asymmetric basins. Drainage anomalies consisting of frequent channel deviation forming straight angles, as well as isolated and compressed meanders, are also recognized in the paleodrainage preserved in this sector of the island.
