“…Clearing of mangrove forests results in statistically significant reductions of C stocks in sediments [29]. Up to 50% of soil C was lost over an 8-year period [30,31] and this study estimated 13%-20% loss in nearly 20 years from the 1980s to 2001. Cohen et al [30] reported that an increase in tidal height of 20 cm at the mangrove stand corresponds to a twofold increase in inundation frequency.…”

Cohen et al [30] reported that an increase in tidal height of 20 cm at the mangrove stand corresponds to a twofold increase in inundation frequency. In this study it was revealed that excavating 25 cm increased the annual inundation time from 463 hours to 7,597 hours ( Figure 5).…”

“…When the flooded area extends from 3 to 8 ha and therefore including the dense mangrove forest, the C transported through the creek showed a strong increase. This threshold-like behavior has been shown as an important nutrient transfer mechanism from mangroves to tidal creeks (Cohen et al, 2004). When flooded areas are larger than 8 ha, however, no increase in C fluxes is verified, since the new flooded areas include salt pans and some of the marginal sands that due to its low C content promoted a marked dilution in carbon fluxes.…”

“…A segunda hipótese também parece não ser confi rmada, já que o nível eustático teve comportamento dominante de elevação durante o Holoceno (Behling & Costa 2000;Behling 2001;Souza Filho & Paradella 2003;Cohen et al 2004Cohen et al e 2005aVedel et al 2006). Portanto, ação tectôni-ca parece ser mais consistente, principalmente quando se leva em consideração o contexto estrutural proposto para a Ilha do Marajó Rossetti et al 2008a).…”
