Manganese(III) Biliverdin IX Dimethyl Ester:  A Powerful Catalytic Scavenger of Superoxide Employing the Mn(III)/Mn(IV) Redox Couple

Abstract: A manganese(III) complex of biliverdin IX dimethyl ester, (MnIIIBVDME)2, was prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, UV/vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, chronocoulometry, electrospray mass spectrometry, freezing-point depression, magnetic susceptibility, and catalytic dismuting of superoxide anion (O2.-). In a dimeric conformation each trivalent manganese is bound to four pyrrolic nitrogens of one biliverdin dimethyl ester molecule and to the enolic oxygen of another molecule. This type of coord… Show more

“…This indirect competition kinetic method is widely used and well validated. 13 The scatter of the rate (∆Abs/min) data was similar for all experiments (∼0.01 min -1 ). However, from Figure •-flux (1000 U/mL catalase, phosphate buffer, 25.0°C).…”

“…We have previously compared the k cat determined by pulse radiolysis and with cyt c assay for several of our Mn porphyrins and MnCl 2 [27,32]. The k cat determined by both methods were the same, which justified using a convenient cyt c assay for testing our prospective SOD mimics.…”

“…The catalytic rate constants for the O 2 •− disproportionation were determined by the cytochrome c (cyt c) assay [31,32]. We have previously compared the k cat determined by pulse radiolysis and with cyt c assay for several of our Mn porphyrins and MnCl 2 [27,32].…”

“…Fisher and colleagues 16 using O 2 -detection with NBT reported a value of k = 6 x 10 5 M -1 s -1 for the reaction of Mn(II) EDTA with O 2 -, while a more recent study could only place an upper bound for this reaction of k < 3 x 10 5 M -1 s -1 using spectrophotometry/stopped flow 1 . It is noted however that other studies have found no evidence for this reaction [17][18][19][20] .…”
