Manganese(I) Complex with Monodentate Arylisocyanide Ligands Shows Photodissociation Instead of Luminescence

Abstract: Recently reported manganese(I) complexes with chelating arylisocyanide ligands exhibit luminescent metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited states, similar to ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes with the same d 6 valence electron configuration used for many different applications in photophysics and photochemistry. However, chelating arylisocyanide ligands require substantial synthetic effort, and therefore it seemed attractive to explore the possibility of using more readily acce… Show more

“…In comparison to [Mn-(CNdippPh OMe2 ) 6 ]PF 6 , the Re−C bond distances are slightly longer, consistent with a first row versus third row transition metal. 28 The C−Re−C bond angles ranging from 178.3(3) to 179.5(3)°and 88.5(2) to 91.5(3)°suggest that the complex has slightly distorted octahedral symmetry (see below). Similarly, this Mn(I) complex adopts a slightly distorted octahedral geometry.…”

“…Recently, a hexakisarylisocyanide Mn(I) complex, [Mn(CNdippPh OMe2 ) 6 ]PF 6 (CNdippPh OMe2 = 4-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,6-diisopropyl-phenylisocyanide), was synthesized through a similar approachreacting phenylisocyanide with Mn(CO) 5 Br followed by salt metathesis in an aqueous hexafluorophosphate solution. 28 The 1 H NMR spectrum of [Re(CNAr) 6 ]PF 6 shows 6 equivalent isocyanide ligandsa single resonance (δ ppm 2.46) is observed for the methyl substituents on the aryl ring and a doublet and doubletof-doublets are observed for the meta (H meta , δ ppm 7. X-ray diffraction quality crystals were grown via vapor diffusion of diethyl ether into a solution of the Re(I) complex in 1,2-difluorobenzene at −35 °C (Figure 1).…”
