Manganese coordination chemistry of bis(imino)phenoxide derived [2 + 2] Schiff-base macrocyclic ligands

Abstract: The crystal structures of 1 -7 are reported (synchrotron radiation was necessary for complexes 1, 3 and 5).Complexes 1 -7 (not 5) were screened for their potential to act as pre-catalysts for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone; 3, 4 and 6, 7 were inactive, whilst 1 and 2 exhibited only poor activity with low conversion (< 15 %) at temperatures above 60 o C.2

“…In the last decades, Mn‐based catalysts including carbonyl complex, halogenated compounds, alkene and cumulenylidene complexes were mainly used for radical polymerization of monomers like MMA, styrene, acrylonitrile, and olefins ,. Only a few reports depicted the application of Mn complexes in the lactones ROP process ,,,,. Mn II salts, like Mn halides and sulfates, acted as Lewis acids catalyzing the bulk polymerization of LA through the activated monomer mechanism were firstly reported ,.…”

“…As part of a programme aimed at exploring the use of earth abundant metal catalysts for ROP, [23][24][25] the manganese complexes 9 and 10 (Scheme 3) were screened for their ability to ROP ε-caprolactone in the presence of benzyl alcohol [14]. Results were compared against the acyclic salt compounds 11 and 12.…”
