MANET simulation studies

Abstract: Simulation is the research tool of choice for a majority of the mobile ad hoc network (MANET) community. However, while the use of simulation has increased, the credibility of the simulation results has decreased. To determine the state of MANET simulation studies, we surveyed the 2000-2005 proceedings of the ACM International Symposium on Mobile Ad Hoc Networking and Computing (MobiHoc). From our survey, we found significant shortfalls. We present the results of our survey in this paper. We then summarize com… Show more

“…It is even scientifically of little relevance since reproducing a scenario / an experiment is not possible due to the ever changing experimental conditions. Therefore, a lot of models and simulators have been developed in the field of ubiquitous computing over time [10,9]. They aim at simulating the network layers in more or less details and indeed most of them are not designed for doing more, like advanced node dynamics for example, or users goals.…”

“…The OSPF overhead level was comparable across the environments after the initialization process. This initialization difference is an example of the significance of operational validation [4][5] with real assets. Without this validation the implementation difference in router synchronization between simulation and emulation would not have been apparent.…”
