Mandibular Residual Ridge Shape and the Masticatory Ability in Complete Denture Wearers

Abstract: In this study, it was elucidated that the masticatory ability in complete denture wearers was influenced by mandibular residual ridge shape. It was confirmed that the mandibular basal area of denture foundation had an influence on the masticatory ability in complete den ture wearers by using a 25item food intake question naire method. AbstractPurpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of mandibular residual ridge shape on the masticatory ability in complete denture wearers. Methods:The… Show more

“…This finding may be attributed to the discrepancies in visible colour tolerance at different regions in the CIELAB colour space. When investigating the colour difference between before and after, ∆E00 rather than ∆Eab is recommended by CIE [6]. The formula is an extension of the CIELAB colour-difference formula with corrections for variation in colour-difference perception dependent on lightness, chroma, hue and chroma-hue interaction.…”

“…For the chewed gum, ∆E is calculated using the CIELAB (or CIE 1976 Lab) colour-difference formula, which has a significant positive correlation with maximum closing velocity and a significant negative correlation with closing angle [5]. Based on CIE Technical Report 142-2001, the CIELAB formula has recently been developed into the CIEDE2000 formula, where ∆Eab has become ∆E00 [6]. Thus ∆E has been recently focused in the field of the masticatory evaluation.…”

“…Complete edentulism has high impact on peoples' lives, and treating this condition with complete dentures may result in expressive functional and aesthetic rehabilitation. Advanced alveolar bone resorption, however, frequently impairs the stability of the denture, particularly in the mandible, preventing the complete success of the treatment . Associating dental implants to this therapeutic approach can improve the treatment success rate significantly by increasing denture stability, a result that can only be achieved through a mechanism that reliably connects prosthesis and implants: the attachment system.…”

“…On this note, the comparatively flat area (CFA) of ridge may be adequate to achieve lever balance in the stressbearing area. While it is important to examine these ridge areas objectively and accurately, existing methods that examine residual ridge shape [2][3][4] have not been able to analyze this CFA. Against this background, we had previously designed a system to analyze the CFA -including ridge crest -on a reconstructed image of the ridge contour by using a non-contact shape measuring device and computer software 5,6) .…”
