Mandibular gland components of european and africanized honey bee queens (Apis mellifera L.)

Abstract: The composition of the five-component honey bee queen mandibular gland pheromone (QMP) of mated European honey bee queens was compared to those of virgin and drone-laying (i.e., laying only haploid unfertilized eggs that develop into males), European queens and Africanized mated queens. QMP of mated European queens showed significantly greater quantities of individual components than all queen types compared, except for a significantly greater quantity of 9-hydroxy-(E)-2-decenoic acid (9-HDA) found in Africani… Show more

“…Values are presented mean±SD to ease comparisons with previous studies Mandibular gland pheromones of Apis mellifera adansonii honeybees which on average only had around 100 μg of 9-ODA (Pankiw et al 1996). This is very important and shows how conserved pheromones of the mandibular glands are in queens compared to those of workers.…”

“…Virgin queens produce a form of QMP in which HVA levels are very low, often below detection levels (8,32,33). If HVA is responsible for effecting QMP-induced changes in brain dopamine levels (see Fig.…”

“…Each strip contains 10 queen equivalents of QMP, a dose that mimics a live queen (8). One queen equivalent contains 200 g of (E)-9-oxodec-2-enoic acid, 80 g of (E)-9-hydroxydec-2-enoic acid (15% ϩ9-HDA and 85% Ϫ9-HDA), 20 g of HOB, and 2 g of HVA (33). Bees were placed in cages (8 cm ϫ 3.5 cm ϫ 1 cm) and exposed to QMP for 2 days.…”

“…Moreover, newly emerged, unmated queens produce a mandibular gland pheromone similar to that of workers (Crewe 1982). In general, the QMP underlies dramatic changes in its quantity and composition during ongoing maturation and ontogenesis with a shift from worker-to queen-like characteristics Pankiw et al 1996;Engels et al 1997;Apsegaite and Skirkevicius 1999). The mandibular gland pheromone bouquet is therefore not only influenced by caste (Plettner et al 1995 but also by the reproductive capacity of an individual.…”
