Mandibular Canine Dimorphism in Establishing Sex Identity in the Lebanese Population

Abstract: Background and Objective. In forensic investigations, mandibular canines provide excellent materials to identify gender since they are more likely to survive disasters. The objective of this study was to investigate gender dimorphism by comparing the mesiodistal width of mandibular permanent canines and intercanine distance in a group of Lebanese population. Methods. Participants consisted of undergraduate students from the School of Dentistry, Lebanese University, for two academic years who fulfilled the incl… Show more

“…He also found higher sexual dimorphism in left side canines than right side (4). Similar results were also reported by Ayoub et al and Kapila et al (3,5). Hence we included only left mandibular canines in order to eliminate discrepancy of canine measurements based on sides and to obtain the highest sexual dimorphism possible in the study.…”

“…To relate the outcomes to the initial situations prior to orthodontic treatment, manual measurements were performed on the T1 and T0 casts , including intercanine distance [1,7,8,11] and overjet [7,25]. The treatment-related changes of these parameters were obtained by calculating the difference between T0 and T1.…”

“…[6][7][8] Dental hard tissue being chemically stable tissue are preserved through fire and bacterial decomposition and therefore guides anthropological, genetic, odontologic and forensic investigators. 3,[9][10][11] Canine Index is a simple odontometric method which uses mandibular canines to find gender dimorphism. Canine index is defined as the ratio between mesiodistal diameter of mandibular canine and intercanine arch width.…”
