Mandevilla Catimbauensis (Apocynaceae), a New Species From the Semi-Arid Region, Pernambuco, Brazil

Abstract: Mandevilla (Apocynaceae) is a neotropical genus which is well represented in Brazil. A recent taxonomic revision of the Brazilian species of Mandevilla subgenus Mandevilla included eight new species, one of them from the State of Pernambuco. Nevertheless, while preparing a survey of Apocynaceae from the Brazilian semi-arid region, a new species of the subgenus was recognised. Mandevilla catimbauensis Souza-Silva, Rapini & J.F.Morales is here described and illustrated. It is a twining plant with elliptic, glabr… Show more

“…Inselbergs are common in some states of Brazil (e.g., Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro), whereas in Colombia and Venezuela are uncommon and restricted to the Amazon basin. Quartzite outcrops are common in the Guyana shield, but in Brazil are restricted to mountains formations in Bahia, Goiás, and Minas Gerais (e.g, Serra do Espinhaço, Chapada Diamantina) (Alves et al, 2007) (Sales et al, 2006;Souza-Silva et al, 2010). The distribution of the populations among inselbergs from the same locality is variable.…”

“…Mandevilla Lindl. (Apocynaceae, Apocynoideae) is the largest genus of the tribe Mesechiteae, with approximately 170 species of lianas, vines and suffruticose herbs distributed through the Neotropics, from Mexico and the Antilles to northern Argentina [3,4,5,6,7]. These plants are adapted to a wide variety of habitats, such as deserts, savannas, tepuis, open grasslands and forests, giving rise to a remarkable morphological variation which makes Mandevilla one of the most challenging and complex genera for taxonomists working on Neotropical Apocynaceae [8].…”
