Managing the Peri‐implant Mucosa: A Clinically Reliable Method for Optimizing Soft Tissue Contours and Emergence Profile

Abstract: An emergence profile that mimics the natural tooth should be obtained by successful esthetic implant restoration. Moreover, it allows proper hygiene, which is fundamental for implant maintenance. The best way to achieve the correct emergence profile is to sculpture the peri-implant mucosa by means of a provisional prosthesis. Prefabricated provisional crowns cannot mimic the complexity and the variations of human soft tissue. Therefore, only a chair-side modification of the provisional restoration can accompli… Show more

“…Different clinical methods of soft tissue conditioning with the use of a provisional restoration have been described in the literature . In the present clinical trial, patients within the provisional‐group were treated with the “dynamic compression technique,” which is a method that relies on a combination of initial pressure and subsequent modification (reduction) of the provisional.…”

“…Conversely, anatomical shape of the implant abutment may help to support the surrounding soft tissues; also this aspect may influence the stability of the buccal peri‐implant soft tissues (Parpaiola et al. ). Unfortunately, no data are actually available on the comparison between soft tissue stability of prostheses supported by Cad‐Cam and stock abutments in anterior areas.…”

“…Moreover, even if CAD‐CAM abutments may provide a support for the peri‐implant mucosal architecture, further information is required on soft tissue shape response after mucosa conditioning with the provisional restoration. Different approaches have been suggested by the current literature on soft tissue sculpting . All authors focused on a provisional prosthesis contour as stable as possible to be faithfully reproduced in the definitive prosthesis.…”
