Managing Physical Development in Peri-Urban Areas of Kumasi, Ghana: A Case of Abuakwa

Abstract: A remarkable trait of the 21st century has been the high rate of urbanization which has characterized the growth and development of cities especially in developing countries. This situation has fuelled the rapid and unguided development and expansion of peri-urban areas as urban dwellers relocate to cities’ peripheries. Focusing on Abuakwa a peri-urban area in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana, this paper assesses the nature and extent of physical development in peri-urban areas, and identifies the fact… Show more

“…It is argued that there will be a need to advance in public policies that take into account the complexity of periurban areas in order to improve the living conditions of the population inhabiting them. This research contributes new reflections to the debate around periurban demarcation in the Global South [25,49,77,78], like others studies in East Asia [79] with China [80] and Vietnam [81], India [82,83], Australia [84,85], and Africa [86][87][88][89]. Likewise, this study follows a line of research to broadly understand the periurban area in Latin America.…”

“…As revealed in the findings, population growth, built-up area expansion and time have a strong exponential function. Increased population growth would naturally result in expansion of towns but the manner of expansion may be through formal or informal means of acquiring land (Amoateng et al ., 2013; Bekele, 2014; Fahmi, 2005). The exponential relationship which compared growth of built-up area and population growth, and the time frame in which they both occurred is supported by the findings of Bhatta (2009) which asserted that urban centers in developing countries do not always become more compact due to development as is the case in Burayu.…”

“…According to Amoateng et al (2013), these regions frequently exhibit unregulated physical expansion trends, leading to the progressive conversion of valuable agricultural land on the periphery into residential and commercial properties.…”
