Managing information overload in virtual teams: Effects of a structured online team adaptation on cognition and performance

Abstract: Information overload (IO) indicates the exchange of too much low-quality information in virtual teams. When being overloaded with information, teams need to adapt and to change communication behaviour. This study introduces and tests a structured online team adaptation (STROTA) procedure that enables virtual teams to reduce IO by improving their team mental model quality. STROTA, built from team adaptation models, is a moderated intervention consisting of three stages: (1) individual situation awareness, (2) t… Show more

“…share what they know. If the task were structured such that members were less able to anticipate who will need what information in order to perform their part, proactive information sharing may not only be less prevalent, but also less effective: Pushing information to recipients for whom it is irrelevant would increase counterproductive information overload (Ellwart, Happ, Gurtner, & Rack, 2015). In sum, effective information sharing depends on both motivation and ability to seek and to share information (Reinholt, Pedersen, & Foss, 2011).…”

“…For further research, it may be worthwhile to test especially boundarylessness in another quantitative study of a larger scale or longitudinal research design again since it did not appear as a signi cant job demand in this study. Future research may also want to examine other possible virtual job demands, such as technological stressors, coordinating efforts, con ict susceptibility, or information overload (6,11,71).…”
