Managing Complications of Submental Artery Involvement after Hyaluronic Acid Filler Injection in Chin Region

Abstract: Summary:Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are becoming popular all over the world, but due to the presence of many blood vessels in the face, there is always a small possibility of vascular complications. We present a case with the ischemic involvement of chin and neck skin after accidental submental artery involvement after hyaluronic acid filler injection for chin region. Impending skin necrosis on the chin and upper neck on the right side was diagnosed quickly by observing the skin changes in the immediate pos… Show more

“…These branches may be compromised in a supraperiosteal plane, in the mental foramen, or in the sub-SMAS plane as well. There have been reports of such compromise in the chin even with supraperiosteal injection and aspiration prophylaxis 7 The sulcus mentalis is particularly susceptible to superficial intradermal injections. This area has a dense tissue character with poor compliance.…”

“…The first case suffered from chin necrosis, and the second case involved vascular compromise in the tongue . Fang M et al presented a case with immediate pain during swallowing and impending skin necrosis on the chin and submental area . We have been made aware of an incidence of unilateral infarction of the posterior one‐third of the tongue and ipsilateral necrosis of the floor of the mouth as a complication of chin augmentation.…”
