Managing an Abundant Crayfish Resource for Conservation -A. Pallipes in Ireland

Abstract: Irish white-clawed crayfish stocks show high genetic uniformity between systems, although individual populations usually show good heterozygosity. The inference is that they were derived from a single immigrating stock, related to those in Western France. Irish crayfish stocks occur widely and often in good numbers in lakes and streams; they are protected and rarely fished, and there are no alien species. Their use for reintroduction into depleted areas within Ireland, including Special Areas of Conservation, … Show more

“…British legislation provides "no-go" areas where NICS may not be introduced, but still allows some importation and movement of non-indigenous stocks, for example the sale of live crayfish over the counter for human consumption, except in Scotland (Bean et al, 2006). In Ireland, fisheries legislation prohibits importation of NICS (Gibson, 1979;Reynolds et al, 2002), to protect the valuable salmonid stocks. Northern Ireland, while being part of the UK, cooperates with the Irish Republic on this.…”

“…Captive breeding of white-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet) can be considered such as an effective method for conservation and restoration of this endangered crayfish species (Reynolds, 1998;Reynolds et al, 2002;Policar et al, 2010). Effective production of juveniles in A. pallipes for reintroduction has used the artificial egg incubation (AI) of eggs (Policar et al, 2008).…”

“…The white clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet) is an endangered species in Western Europe (Reynolds et al, 2002) and this species is also regarded as an heritage species (Füreder and Reynolds, 2003). Methods such as captive breeding and ranching using local stocks of A. pallipes can be useful during conservation and reintroduction of this species (Reynolds et al, 2002).…”

“…Methods such as captive breeding and ranching using local stocks of A. pallipes can be useful during conservation and reintroduction of this species (Reynolds et al, 2002). Ireland, the only country in Europe with A. pallipes free from non-native crayfish (Demers et al, 2005), can be considered as a safe place for production of A. pallipes for future European restocking programs (Policar et al, 2008).…”
