In this paper, we investigate empirically the relationship between object-oriented design metrics and testability of classes. We address testability from the point of view of unit testing effort. We collected data from three open source Java software systems for which JUnit test cases exist. To capture the testing effort of classes, we used metrics to quantify the corresponding JUnit test cases. Classes were classified, according to the required unit testing effort, in two categories: high and low. In order to evaluate the relationship between object-oriented design metrics and unit testing effort of classes, we used logistic regression methods. We used the univariate logistic regression analysis to evaluate the individual effect of each metric on the unit testing effort of classes. The multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to explore the combined effect of the metrics. The performance of the prediction models was evaluated using Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis. The results indicate that: 1) complexity, size, cohesion and (to some extent) coupling were found significant predictors of the unit testing effort of classes and 2) multivariate regression models based on object-oriented design metrics are able to accurately predict the unit testing effort of classes.

Abstract.A number of studies have investigated different means of the software refactoring. The question is whether there are any effective methods that could provide automated refactoring of the architecture on the design stage with no source code available yet. With the aim of evaluating this possibility, the algorithms of the UML class diagrams analysis were proposed. In addition, the computational experiment was conducted to evaluate the algorithms' performance depending on the initial diagram size.

Abstract-During last two decades, object-oriented paradigm has arisen as a prevailing software engineering practice for solving software problems. A large number of object-oriented metrics are proposed during that period to measure the properties like abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, coupling, cohesion, information hiding and reusability. Most of the researchers mainly depict attributes like class, object, and method to measure the properties in their research. In this paper metrics are defined to depict Member Access Control mechanism and then employed in the class hierarchy. By successfully implemented the proposed metrics in object-oriented programing, we quantify the derived classes which directly results to reduce code, time and complexity of the object-oriented software systems. The proposed metrics provides a new way to understand and imply these concepts in research and development of the software using object-oriented approach.
