The coastal area of China has faced major strategic planning and environmental pollution, including heavy metals pollution. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of Cd pollution on the ecology in coastal areas of China. A soil Cd pollution database of 300 counties or districts in coastal areas was screened from academic dissertations and academic journal papers. Based on the database, the ecological risk was evaluated using entropy methods and probabilistic ecological risk assessment (PERA), and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods were analyzed. In China's coastal areas, the soil Cd content in 10.33% of the counties was higher than the minimum of risk control value (1.5 mg/kg), and in 4.00% of the counties was higher than the maximum of risk control value (4.0 mg/kg). The ecological risks were highly compatible with national strategic planning areas. Guangxi Province, Zhejiang Province, and Guangdong Province ranked among the top three coastal areas for soil Cd contamination, and the ecological risks were 18.80%, 17.89%, and 15.77% at the maximum no-effect concentration/lowest effect concentration (NOEC/LOEC) level. This study can provide insights to policymakers regarding the protection of ecosystems threatened by heavy metals in the process of regional strategic planning.

CeO2 with different morphologies (nanoparticles/NP, nanorods/NR, nanocubes/NC, nano‐octahedra/NO) are synthesized and decorated on BiOI nanoplates substrates to form CeO2@BiOI composites, which are used for aqueous Cr(VI) degradation. The intersurface states between BiOI and diverse CeO2 nanoparticles exhibit distinct behaviors when checked by XPS and photoluminescence intensity. The Cr(VI) degradation results show that the synthesized CeO2@BiOI nanocomposites possess higher photocatalytic activity than pure CeO2 or BiOI, and the CeO2‐NP@BiOI nanocomposite (molar ratio of CeO2: BiOI = 1:2) is the best one among them, with which the Cr(VI) is degraded up to 95.0% after 30 min irradiation using it as the photocatalyst. The superior catalytic performance of CeO2‐NP@BiOI can be attributed to a higher Ce3+ ratio of CeO2‐NP, a larger specific surface area, relatively low OH/CO32− content on the composite surface, and especially the good interaction between the CeO2 (111) facet and the BiOI surface.

Source identification and risk assessment of heavy metals are ongoing hot topics in current research, but few studies have been performed on the linkage mechanism between them. In the past, the amount of heavy metals discharged was the identification criterion for high-risk source but failed to consider different toxicity of heavy metals in the risk level of each pollution source. Therefore, it is impossible to accurately determine high-risk pollution source. For this situation, this study introduced a risk assessment model based on the source apportionment model, which can quantitatively analyze the source-based risk. Meanwhile, pollution assessment indexes and a risk assessment model were applied to evaluate the levels of pollution and risk of heavy metals, showing that lead (Pb) caused relatively serious pollution and arsenic (As) generated the highest ecological risk and noncarcinogenic risk. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model identified and quantified the sources of heavy metals (coal-related activities source, mixed source of mining and traffic emissions, industrial activity source, agricultural source related to the application of agrochemicals) with the corresponding contributions of 42, 30, 26, and 2%, respectively. Then PMF was combined with potential ecological risk index and human health risk assessment model to quantify the risk from pollution sources, indicating that the coal-related activities source was the largest pollution source (31-36%) that caused human health risks, while the mixed source of mining and transportation emissions posed the greatest threat (29%) to the ecosystem health. Therefore, both sources should be identified as the priority pollution sources.
