Management of Zygomatic Complex Fractures in a Tertiary Hospital: A Retrospective Study

Abstract: Aim This retrospective study was done to analyse the management of zygomatic complex fractures necessitating surgical intervention in a tertiary care hospital in a 8 year period in terms of incidence, cause, pattern and treatment. Materials and Methods Two hundred and thirteen cases of zygomatic complex fractures treated during this period were analysed. Results One hundred and eighty three cases of zygomatic complex fractures were treated by a two point fixation while additional fixation was used in 25 cases … Show more

“…This neurosensory deficit was evaluated by two-point discrimination test. The incidence of infraorbital nerve paresthesia varies from 35 to 94 % of all the zygomatic complex fractures [25]. In our study, three patients (5 %) had neurosensory deficit, the value being low as compared to the studies of Ahmed et al (91.73 %) [26].…”

“…6,7,10 The peak incidence of maxillofacial injuries was in the age group 21 to 30 years which was in concordance with all the other studies. 1,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] This is because of the increased use of vehicles and travel in the third decade of life. The most common etiological factor for maxillofacial injuries is road traffic crashes in our country.…”

“…In studies by Obuekwe et al and Menon et al, the incidence of zygoma fractures were 18% and 31.7% respectively. 13,20 Of the 37 fractures of the zygoma, arch fractures were the commonest (62.1%). In a study by Adam et al, body of zygoma was commonly fractured (57.7%) followed by combined fractures and isolated arch fractures.…”

“…Different protocols have been proposed for the site of fixation and points of fixation of iZMC fragments. These range from no fixation to one-point fixation, [4] two-point fixation [14] and even three-point fixation. [15] In this study, 7 patients underwent two-point fixation, and 4 patients underwent three-point fixation.…”
