Management of waste and its impact on healthy living behavior: literature review

Abstract

Health education has the potential to influence individuals receiving assistance to adopt healthier behaviors, such as managing environmental hygiene through waste management. This research aims to furnish insights for health education practitioners regarding the opportunities and challenges involved in enhancing education on healthy lifestyles, encompassing waste management. The study comprised a literature review conducted by searching Google Scholar using Publish or Perish (PoP) for publications between 2019 and 2023. A total of 31 pieces of literature were identified for analysis using the PRISMA method. The analysis categorized the literature into three groups: mentoring, outreach, and exploration, which were subsequently mapped using NVivo. The analysis outcomes revealed that research and community service works addressing waste management to promote a healthy lifestyle are primarily found in journals with lower accreditation, typically in the online accreditation range and SINTA 4 to 5. Additionally, the results underscored that socialization-related content dominated, followed by assistance-related content, with exploration being the least represented category. These findings suggest a deficiency in research studies or explorations focusing on waste management to promote healthy living. This realization presents both an opportunity and a challenge for health and environmental practitioners to intensify their efforts in studying health promotion through waste management.
