Background Since 2001, the French Armed Forces have sustained many casualties during the Global War on Terror; however, even today, there is no French Military trauma registry. Some French service members (SMs) were treated in US Military Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs) and were recorded in the US Department of Defense Trauma Registry (DoDTR). Our objective was to conduct a descriptive analysis of the injuries sustained by French SMs reported in the DoDTR and subsequent care provided to them to assist in understanding the importance of building a French Military trauma registry. Methods Using DoDTR data collected from 2001 to 2017, a retrospective descriptive analysis was conducted. We identified 59 French SMs treated in US MTFs. The characteristics of the SMs’ demographics, injuries, care provided to them, and discharge outcomes were summarized. Results Among the 59 French SMs identified, 46 (78%) sustained battle injuries (BIs) and 13 (22%) sustained nonbattle injuries (NBIs). There were 47 (80%) SMs injured in Afghanistan ( Opération Pamir) , while 12 (20%) were injured in Opération Chammal in Iraq and Syria. Explosives accounted for 52.5% of injuries, while 25.4% were due to gunshot wounds; all were BIs. The majority of reported injuries were penetrating (59.3%), most of which were BIs (71.7%). The mean Injury Severity Score for BIs was 12 (SD = 8.9) compared to 6 (SD = 1.7) for NBIs. Around half of SMs ( n = 30; 51%) were injured in Afghanistan between the years 2008–2010. Among a total of 246 injuries sustained by 59 patients, extremities were the body part most prone to BIs followed by the head and face. Four SMs died after admission (6.8%). Conclusions The DoDTR provides extensive data on trauma injuries that can be used to inform injury prevention and clinical care. The majority of injuries sustained by French SMs were BIs, caused by explosives, and predominantly occurring to the extremities; these findings are similar to those of other studies conducted in combat zones. There is a need to establish a French Military trauma registry to improve the combat casualty care provided to French SMs, and its creation may benefit from the DoDTR model.

Introducción: El traumatismo vascular constituye una entidad de importancia en los servicios de emergencia por su alta incidencia de complicaciones. Objetivo: Caracterizar el traumatismo vascular en un hospital de segundo nivel de Ecuador durante el periodo julio 2017-julio 2020. Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal y correlacional que incluyó 45 pacientes. Se calcularon medidas de tendencia central como media y desviación estándar de la variable cuantitativa edad, así como las frecuencias absolutas y relativas para las demás variables. Resultados: Predominaron los jóvenes de sexo masculino. Resultó más frecuente el trauma penetrante por arma blanca y accidentes de tránsito. La mayoría de los diagnósticos se realizó por sospecha clínica. La técnica quirúrgica de mayor empleo fue la revascularización con vena safena invertida en trece pacientes. Conclusiones: Predominaron los traumatismos vasculares de arteria humeral por mecanismos penetrantes en jóvenes de sexo masculino y de procedencia urbana, solucionados por revascularización con vena safena.

Background Reporting war trauma research is an arduous mission because it needs accurate data collection and it is considered a tough task as a result of the emergent management nature of such injuries which implies neglecting the medical records. The conflict in Syria involved extreme numbers of war trauma injuries which might be implemented in creating a prototype for preparedness plans which might decrease the number of casualties or, at the very least, minimize the damage for future combat trauma injuries. Material and Methods Data were sought from the Department of Surgery at Hama National Hospital on war injuries during 2017 to make a research paper on the experience of Hama National Hospital, Syria, a nonmilitary hospital that treats war injuries. Results In 2017, 2,912 war injury patients were admitted to the Hama National Hospital, among which 683 (23.455%) were dead-on-arrival and the remaining 2,229 patients (76.545%) were treated in emergency room (ER). Among those treated in the ER, shrapnel was the first cause of injury reported in 1,165 patients (52.26%), followed by bullets in 585 (26.24%) and trauma in 316 (14.17%). There were no data on the age of patients, the initial investigations done, the Glasgow Coma Scale score on admission, the primary management, the follow-ups, or even the mortality rates among hospitalized patients. The data were insufficient to write a well-balanced research paper because of the scarcity of information extracted from the medical records. Conclusion Doing a research in conflict settings requires more attention to detail and the medical staff should be trained to take care of the medical records because even if it seems inappropriate to spend time on recording in conflict atmospheres, making well-established recordings would contribute to the enhancement of the health care management of future war trauma injuries.
