Behavioural response of the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum towards various colour cues was evaluated and preference was assessed. Among the coloured surfaces, dark pink was observed to be the most preferred one (27.78, 28.39 and 29.33% at 24, 48 and 72 hrs after release, respectively). Blue, black and yellow revealed moderate preference. Influence of coloured lights on T. castaneum revealed that violet coloured LEDs had superior effect on attraction. The trend on preference of colour cues did not vary with increase in time period and red was the most avoided colour indicating its repellency nature.

This chapter discusses the origin of stored-grain insect pests, the assessment of storage losses, the detection of insect infestation in stored commodities using physical, chemical and staining, the identification of insects in stored grain, and the sources of infestation. The storage structures and the traditional methods of storage are briefly described. The components of integrated pest management of stored grains, which include pest monitoring/sampling, physical, biological and chemical insecticides (including botanicals, insect growth regulators and fumigants) are described. The non-insect pests of stored grain and their management using various chemicals are also described. The existing postharvest system has to be improved to cut postharvest losses at the farm level where ∼70% of grains are stored and consumed as food and feed and for seed purposes.
