If Mixed Reality applications are supposed to become truly ubiquitous, they face the challenge of an ever evolving set of hardware and software systems - each with their own standards and APIs–that need to work together and become part of the same shared environment (the application). A unified standard is unlikely so we can not rely on a single software development stack to incorporate all necessary parts. Instead we need frameworks that are modular and flexible enough to be adapted to the needs of the application at hand and are able to incorporate a wide range of setups for devices, services, etc. We identified a set of common questions that can be used to characterize and analyze Mixed Reality applications and use these same questions to identify challenges as well as present solutions in the form of three frameworks tackling the fields of tracking and inference (UbiTrack), interaction (Ubi-Interact) and visualization (UbiVis). Tracking and inference has been addressed for quite some time now while interaction is a current topic with existing solutions. Visualization will be focused more in the future. We present several applications in development together with their future vision and explain how the frameworks help realize these and other potential apps.

The accuracy of a real time tracking system for industrial AR (IAR) applications often needs to comply with production toler ances. Such a system typically incorporates different off-Ionline devices so that the overall precision and accuracy cannot be triv ially stated. Additionally, tracking needs to be flexible to not inter fere with existing working processes and it needs to be operated and maintained free of error by on-site personnel who typically have a quality management (QM) background. For the final validation of such a complex tracking setup, empiric testing alone is either too expensive or lacks generality. This paper demonstrates a new approach to define and verify, de ploy and validate, as well as to operate and maintain an IAR track ing infrastructure. We develop our concepts on the basis of an IAR application in the field of QM in the aircraft production process. It integrates a qualitative visual comparison with accurate quantitative measurements of 3D coordinates using a metrological probe. The focus is on the verification, validation, and error free operation.Monte Carlo simulation predicts the error for arbitrary system states. Using a limited set of empiric measurements in the target environment allows us to validate the simulation and thereby val idate the application. This combination assures compliance of the IAR application with the required production tolerances.We show that our simulation model yields realistic results, using an in-depth analysis of an optical IR tracking system and a high precision coordinate measurement machine capable of densely sampling the entire tracking volume. Additionally, it allows for a straightforward derivation of run-time consistency checks for the automatic identification of possible system failures. Also, estima tion of the system performance during the planning and definition phases becomes possible, using the elementary accuracy specifica tions of the involved sensor systems.

Resumo -A Realidade Aumentada (RA) é uma área de pesquisa que visa enriquecer a experiência de interação do usuário com o mundo que o cerca, entrelaçando elementos sintéticos, gerados pelo computador, com o mundo real, tornando cada vez menos perceptível a distinção entre o real e o virtual. Segundo pesquisadores da área de RA, o aspecto de interfaces de usuário na Realidade Aumentada é ainda uma área sub explorada, com vários desafios de projeto e implementação. Essas interfaces têm o potencial de usar elementos, por exemplo, 2d e 3d, adaptando-os a mudanças de contextos em tempo-real. Não há muitas ferramentas disponíveis para o desenvolvimento e visualização de interfaces de RA, muito menos que sejam cientes de contexto. Sendo assim, este artigo apresenta duas ferramentas que podem ser usadas de forma integrada para a criação e visualização de interfaces de RA cientes de contexto: um framework de visualização de interfaces de RA (VISAR) orientado a componentes de interface (padrões), que adapta, em tempo de execução, interfaces de RA em resposta a mudanças de contexto do ambiente; e um editor de interfaces de RA (VISAR-IE) que utiliza padrões para criar interfaces de RA cientes de contexto, permitindo o reúso e compartilhamento de componentes da interface. O uso de padrões acelera o tempo de projeto e implementação de interfaces de RA. Dois estudos de caso são também apresentados para validar o uso das ferramentas desenvolvidas: RA em mesa tangível multitoque, e um sistema de RA para bombeiros.
