“…Previous reports of total lymph node yield do exist and have, unsurprisingly, demonstrated significant variance between the MRND and SND. Dias et al [13] found the mean number of nodes dissected per SND, and MRND was 18 (range 12-23 nodes) and 39 (range 32-45 nodes), which was also a trend observed in this study. The importance of lymph node yield has been previously established [18].…”

“…However, given the high levels of variability amongst patient cohorts, primary cancer locations and pre-surgery staging, such a trial would be difficult to Dias et al [13] 2009 Larynx Patel et al [14] 2008 Oropharynx, hypopharynx, oral cavity and larynx N1-N3 complete. Future research is likely to move on to less invasive techniques that do not compromise efficacy, such as the super selective and robot-assisted neck dissections [21,15,2].…”

“…Kligerman et al examined 76 patients with clinically T3/T4 N0 SCC of the larynx and found a 30% frequency of occult neck disease 15. This study was later expanded by Dias et al to 327 patients, where the occurrence of occult cervical metastases was 21.4% 16…”
