Management of sternal dislocation with and without surgery in cats: Owner-assessed long-term follow-up of two clinical cases

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to report two cases of sternal dislocation (SD) in cats and the long-term outcomes with and without surgery. In a cat with poly-traumatized SD (Case 1), mandibular, radial, and ulnar fractures were corrected first, and the SD was allowed to heal without intervention for 14 months. However, normal healing did not occur and sternal instability remained. Therefore, the SD was corrected surgically, and the cat recovered fully within 4 weeks. In a cat with isolated SD (Case 2), surgery was … Show more

“…VSD also provides 98% neutral zone range of motion during flexion-extension at the treated vertebral motion unit (Koehler et al 2005). Postoperative complications and adverse effects also depend on the experience of the primary surgeon (Rossmeisl et al 2005;Rahman et al 2017;Choi et al 2018b). The lowest incidence of major complications (2.6%) was found with the most experienced surgeons, compared with 2 to > 3 times higher (5.3-8.2%) incidences of complications with less experienced surgeons (Rossmeisl et al 2013).…”

“…Co., Ltd., Seoul, Republic of Korea) infusion and volatile anaesthetic sevoflurane inhalant (1-5%; Abbott Korea Ltd., Seoul, Republic of Korea). Inhaled oxygen and positive pressure were maintained, and an automated anaesthetic machine (PAIEON, J & TEC, Goyang-Si, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea) monitored ECG and CO 2 partial pressure during surgery, as described previously (Seo et al 2017;Choi et al 2018a;Choi et al 2018b). After shaving the entire back region, aseptic preparation, clipping, and draping were performed.…”

“…Hematological testing was performed on the day before the first treatment and then once every two weeks thereafter for 10 weeks. Part of the blood collected on the test day was stored in a CBC tube containing EDTA-2 K, an anticoagulant, and the red blood cell (RBC) count, hematocrit (Hct), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), white blood cell (WBC) count, and platelet count (PLT) were assessed using an automatic blood analyzer (ADVIA 2120i™, Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, Vienna, Austria), as described previously [ 35 ].…”

“…Respiratory rate was monitored by the movement of the abdominal and chest wall (breath/min) twice daily. Heart rate and ECG was recorded with a Cardiofax ECG-9020 electrocardiograph (Nihon Kohden, Tokyo, Japan) once daily for three days [ 13 ]. Beside these normal clinical signs were closely monitored daily until end of the experiment to identify any abnormality due to surgery or any side effect for administering Entelon150 including changes of body weight, feeding and drinking behavior, urination and defecation frequency, bleeding, salivating, vomiting, abnormality or redness of skin and eye color, abnormal sound and abnormal movement but none were observed in entire experimental period.…”
