Management of solar energy in microgrids using IoT-based dependable control

Abstract: Abstract-Solar energy generation requires efficient monitoring and management in moving towards technologies for netzero energy buildings. This paper presents a dependable control system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) to control and manage the energy flow of renewable energy collected by solar panels within a microgrid. Data for optimal control include not only measurements from local sensors but also meteorological information retrieved in real-time from online sources. For system fault tolerance acros… Show more

“…A solar energy company can install various IoTbased sensors on the solar panels and monitor their performance and provide real-time insight. Since these sensors can collect massive amounts of data, companies can utilize this to have a more granular oversight over their systems [12]. Various IoT based sensor techniques are available for monitoring solar energy grids for maximum power efficiency.…”

“…A weather station is used to measure the speed and wind direction so that the solar tracker can be switched to the protective mode in the case of strong winds via the optimisation process presented in Section 4.4. The solar tracking system includes two 24 VDC motors allowing to control its azimuth and elevation, respectively, within the range of 0-360° and 0-90°, as reported in [38]. For validation, the solar radiation is measured by using a sensor having an operating range of 0-1800 W/m 2 with an accuracy of 1 W/m 2 , attached to the PV panel, as shown in Fig.…”
