Management of osteoporotic pertrochanteric fractures with external fixation in elderly patients

Abstract: Osteosynthesis with an external fixator in elderly patients with a high anesthesia risk is a fast, minimally invasive procedure in the treatment of pertrochanteric fractures, resulting in fewer pre- and postoperative complications.

“…In this respect, our study was consistent with the literature. [15][16][17] In some studies, mortality rates of the patients treated with internal fixation have been significantly lower than the mortality rates of the patients treated with hemiarthroplasty. [18,19] There are also studies advocating the opposite.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] While stable intertrochanteric fractures can be treated efficiently, unstable fractures pose serious and stressful problems. In the surgical treatment of intertrochanteric fractures, endoprosthesis and external fixators are used in conjunction with methods such as rigid pinplates, sliding plate compression pins and screws, osteotomy and osteosynthesis plates, and intramedullary nails.…”

[1][2][3][4][5] The advantages of Ender nails include: reduction in mortality rates, less blood loss, minimal surgical trauma, and a shorter duration of time in surgery. [6][7][8][9] Ender nails have been used in almost 12,000 cases in Europe; however, the technique has not been as popular in North America.…”

“…Advancing technology and treatment modalities have increased the life expectancies of males and females, so the incidence of intertrochanteric femur fractures [1] has increased. Given the high mortality and morbidity rates of these fractures [11,12], especially in older people, there are concerns about surgical treatment options.…”

“…Advancing technology and treatment modalities have increased the life expectancies of males and females, so the incidence of these fractures is increasing [1]. Furthermore, with existing osteoporosis, bone fractures happen more easily with low-intensity trauma [2,3] .…”
