Multi-criteria decision analysis and cost-benefit analysis, either individually or in combination, have been used as the preferred tools to develop ecosystem services valuation, presenting significant discrepancies and variations between the calculated values. To counteract this problem, a new framework was developed based on a hierarchical weighting of the non-provisioning ecosystem services, using biodiversity as the reference ecosystem service since it is the easiest to apprehend. Their monetisation was made using the average price of EU carbon dioxide emission allowances during 2019 and 2020, obtaining reasonable and comparable results in line with what was expected for the study region. However, the revised EU Emissions Trading System Directive, which will apply from 2021–2030, generated a price escalation of carbon allowances, making it necessary to adjust or rethink the proposed framework. To achieve this goal, the paper proposes the introduction of new vectors or “missing ecosystem services” to counterbalance efforts to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions without necessarily removing humans from the equation: welfare and human health. As the linkages regarding ecosystem health, ecological restoration and human health are not well known, only welfare was incorporated into the framework. The results were highly satisfactory, in line with what was expected for the study region and the ones obtained before the price escalation of carbon allowances that started in 2021.

Determining the Safe Distance for Mining Equipment Operation When Forming an Internal Dump in a Deep Open Pit

In the surface mining of mineral deposits, land resources suitable for agricultural purposes are inappropriately spent in large volumes. When mining deep open pits, overburden rocks are mainly transported to the surface. The optimal solution for reducing the area of disturbed lands is the placement of overburden rocks in internal dumps in the open pit. This is especially suitable when mining a mineral deposit with several open pits where at least one of them is depleted. Therefore, it is important to assess the feasibility of building an internal dump, based on the stability parameters of its slopes and the safe distance for placing mining equipment within its boundaries, which was the focus of this research. Numerical modeling with Slide 5.0 software was used to determine the stability of the dump slope inside the open pit and the safe distance from the upper slope edge for placing mining equipment. This reflected the geomechanical situation occurring within the boundaries of the dump formed in the open-pit field with a high degree of reliability. It was determined that the maximum standard safety factor values of the open-pit slopes are within the limits when the overburden rocks border on the hard bedrock (Ks.s.f ≥ 1.2). Under the condition where the dump slope bordered on sedimentations represented by clays, loams, and sands with a strength of 2–3 on the Mohs scale, the safety factor decreased by 22%. It was determined that the minimum safe distance from the outer contour of the dragline base to the upper edge of a single-tier dump was 15.5 m with a safety factor of 1.21. The maximum safe distance values in the range of 73.5–93 m were concentrated within the boundaries of sections 5–9, with a safety factor from 1.18 to 1.28. When the dragline was located within the boundaries of section 7, the dump construction works should be conducted only if the dump exist for up to 3 years. Based on the identified parameters, on the example of using the ESH-11/70 walking dragline, a technological scheme of its operation was developed with the allocation of safe boundaries for its placement when forming an internal dump. The results obtained are useful for the development of projects for the reclamation of depleted open pits.

The study of the properties of disturbed soils and rocks makes it possible to establish the parameters of the natural fertility of the studied substrates, to detect limiting factors, and to determine a set of restoration measures. The tested overburden rocks with the largest stratigraphic share of the open-pit quarries of the Nikopol manganese and Kerch iron ore deposits were loamy-like loess (Quaternary) and grey-green clay (Neogene). There is a certain parametric relationship between texture, density, porosity, the structural and physical state of different models of artificial reclaimed profiles. The composition and properties of rocks of edaphic structures of technosoils differ according to zonal natural and climatic conditions of the subzones of the Ukrainian Steppe. Loess-like loam and grey-green clay of the Kerch iron ore deposit are distinguished by a higher bulk density, lower porosity, and wilting moisture compared to samples from the Nikopol manganese ore basin. The use of the rotor complex leads to mechanical destruction and an increase in the content of small particles of rocks. Self-compacting processes occur to a large extent in multilayer structures. This pattern is observed at the boundary of the backfill differentiated in texture layers of technosoils. This indicates the existence of a barrier that prevents the relationship of edaphic properties between substrata stratums. Optimal ratio of clay minerals provides a rather high capacity of grey-green clay for water absorption. The model of technosoil composed of grey-green clay differs in a larger number of water-resistant micro-aggregates. The best conditions for land reclamation are connected with including grey-green clay in two- and three-layer constructions of technosoils, providing a waterproofing effect.
