Management ofSitotroga cerealellain stored cereal grains: a review

Abstract: The economic loss due to pest attack in stored commodities is a serious problem worldwide. About 200 insect species attack stored commodities. These insect pests are responsible for quantitative and qualitative losses in cereal grains. Among the stored grain pests, Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella is considered as common, top of the list and most destructive pest of cereal grains. Its infestation starts in the standing crop and continues in storage. Although there are many control strategies, our nee… Show more

“…Several factors affect the quality of maize grains during storage, such as grain moisture, temperature, relative humidity (RH) of air in the storage environment, the presence of fungus, and attack by pests (Paraginski, Vanier, Berrios, Oliveira, & Elias, ; Rehman, Habib, & Zafar, ). Pests are responsible for approximately 40% of the losses during grain storage (Bushra & Aslam, ). Weevils ( S. zeamais Motschulsky) are the main insect pest of maize grains, attacking both in the field and during storage (Fikremariam, Tadele, Stephen, Yoseph, & Stefan, ).…”

“…The use of radiation has been shown to be effective in controlling pests, causing little, or no damage to the grains (Bushra & Aslam, ). According to Hallman (), gamma radiation doses above 150 Gy were effective in controlling the pest Sitotroga cerealella by reducing the population's fecundity, decreasing the number of eggs hatched, and reducing larval growth; these effects were also inherited by the F1 progeny.…”
