Management of FDG avid Benign Sinonasal Schneiderian Papilloma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Background: The inverted and oncocytic subtypes of sinonasal Schneiderian papillomas are benign tumors with possible rare malignant transformation and are typically managed with complete surgical resection and close follow-up. While computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are mainstays in preoperative evaluation of bony invasion and soft tissue extension of the lesion, their imaging characteristics by 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is less well charact… Show more

“…8 Even when there is a tumor, associated obstructive sinusitis is often present, and attention should be paid to the accompanying FDG accumulation. 8 Here, the SUV was high, but there was no evidence of central necrosis; therefore, leiomyoma was diagnosed preoperatively. Although PET of nasal leiomyoma has not yet been reported, a comprehensive diagnosis must be made based on FDG accumulation on PET/CT and other findings distinguishing it from sarcoma.…”

“…A decreased FDG accumulation in the center of the nasal leiomyosarcoma may be useful for diagnosing sinonasal sarcoma 7 . PET can yield false-positive results; over half of the incidentally noted FDG accumulation in the sinonasal region on PET/CT represents inflammation 8 . Even when there is a tumor, associated obstructive sinusitis is often present, and attention should be paid to the accompanying FDG accumulation 8 .…”
