Management of C-shaped root canal configuration with three different obturation systems

Abstract: Unusual root canal anatomy always poses a diagnostic and treatment challenge. Identification of such variation is important for the success of the root canal treatment outcome. The C-shaped root canal configuration is one of the aberrant morphology of molar teeth, commonly the mandibular second molar. In this configuration, the canals are connected by slit or web. The presence of fin, slit and web makes through debridement obstacle for the clinician. This case reports present successful management of C-shaped … Show more

“…4 There is possibility of tooth having single root canal. 5 The C-shaped root may also be formed by coalescence because of deposition of the cementum with time. 6 Melton et al, in 1991 classified C-shaped canals on basis of cross-section.…”

“…[3] Amongst the different anatomical variations in the root canal systems, the unconventional and complex configuration of the C shaped roots and root canals presents with clinical adversities and challenges, compromising the objectives of endodontic therapy. [4] Cooke and Cox in 1979 first documented the C shaped configuration in root canal anatomy, which was termed owing to the 'C' shaped cross sectional anatomy of the root and/or root canal. [5] A high prevalence of C-shaped canal configuration has been reported in mandibular second molars ranging from 2.7% to 44.5%.…”
