Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) is a novel technology that can be used to manage heritage and historical buildings. As capturing and modelling the heritage environment is often challenging and time consuming, this new method is an emerging solution to overcome such problems. Although HBIM is a promising innovation, the research into this technology is still inadequate, particularly in Malaysia. In an attempt to expand this field, the paper aims to discuss the workflow, the benefits and future research directions for HBIM. Through extensive literature reviews, the first part will discuss the process of HBIM; while the second part will highlight the recent developments of HBIM to provide an insight on the application and its advantages. From the study, the workflow can be categorized into three major steps; Data Acquisition, Data processing and 3D modelling. In addition, twelve (12) case studies of BIM applications in the area of cultural heritage were reported. It can be concluded that the incorporation of BIM with historical built environments led to the development of Building Performance Analysis, Structural Analysis, Facility Management, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Fire Safety Design for existing buildings. Findings intend to expand the information and bring forward the potentials of BIM in documenting cultural heritage buildings in Malaysia.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes are the most effective way to know existing architectural structures, integrating the most advanced potentials of 3D modeling and the structured storage of heterogeneous information. Many HBIM (Heritage Building Information Modeling) applications lead to the systematization of survey data, even though a univocal working method is not yet clearly defined. This research considers the decomposition of architecture, based on structured criteria, and its reconstruction, through ideal models, as the main moments of the HBIM process. This hypothesis is verified through a procedure that links the survey 3D data with the characteristics of the ideal HBIM model, which allows a continuous comparison between the project model and as-built. The research provides for the setting up of a general methodology that, according to a growing approach to the complexity of the analyzed buildings, compares the process followed on two architectural structures. The study analyzes some important HBIM issues: The relationship between the semantic modeling and the surfaces' continuity of architectural heritage; the relationship between the elements standardization, geometric irregularities, and material heterogeneity; the reliability of the built models; and the evaluation of the gap between an ideal model and the objective accuracy of surveying.

Abstract:The present paper is focused on the application of a methodological model specifically designed to develop the tasks related to analysis and dissemination of the Roman Hispania site of Arucci (Aroche, Huelva). The main aim of our approach is to reconcile the diffusion of the results obtained after the excavation, documentation, and the study of the archaeological record with the methodological analysis of a Geographic Information System (GIS). We consider that a GIS is the most appropriate tool in archaeology for this purpose since it allows users to manage a large amount of data in diverse formats and insert it in a closed topographic reference frame. For that purpose, we restrict the field of action to the North House (a house built in the time of Emperor Augustus that lasted until the 3 rd century AD). The real power of this research relies on the integration of the digital building archaeological record in a GIS, while the architecture of the Roman house is reconstructed virtually from archaeological remains, in this way the domestic space is visually comprehensible. According to the results obtained in this pilot experience, we can affirm that the union of GIS and infographics allows archaeological reality to surpass the strictly academic scope and promote it to society making possible the Arucci site approachable to professionals of archaeology as well as to the uninitiated. The feasibility of the proposal that was carried out within the North House encourages us to consider the export of this study model to the rest of buildings that make up the site such as the foro, macellum, balneum as, well as other domus. Keywords: Roman domestic architecture; GIS; 3D models; virtual archaeology; Baetica Resumen:El presente trabajo se centra en la aplicación de un modelo metodológico específicamente diseñado para desarrollar las tareas de análisis y difusión del yacimiento hispanorromano de Arucci (Aroche, Huelva). El principal objetivo de nuestro planteamiento es conciliar la difusión de los resultados obtenidos tras las excavación, documentación y estudio del registro arqueológico con la metodología de análisis de un Sistema de Información Geográfica (SIG). Consideramos que es la herramienta metodológica más apropiada en arqueología para este fin, ya que permite gestionar una gran cantidad de información en diversos formatos e insertarla en un marco de referencia topográfico cerrado.
