Management of Asymptomatic Ovarian and Other Adnexal Cysts Imaged at US: Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound Consensus Conference Statement

Abstract: The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound convened a panel of specialists from gynecology, radiology, and pathology to arrive at a consensus regarding the management of ovarian and other adnexal cysts imaged sonographically in asymptomatic women. The panel met in Chicago, Ill, on October 27-28, 2009, and drafted this consensus statement. “…The exact prevalence is unknown given the limited amount of published data and the lack of established screening programs for ovarian cancer. However, studies have estimated the incidence to be anywhere between 5% and 17% 1-4 and 60-70% of unilocular cyst resolved spontaneously [5][6][7][8] . In Bangladesh we do not have exact data for the incidence but postmenopausal women with cysts are diagnosed as routine USG or in a woman who complains of slight discomfort in lower abdomen for any reason.…”

“…In premenopausal women, ovarian cysts with uniform internal echoes, reticulations or septations may represent an endometriotic cyst or haemorrhagic cyst. A follow-up ultrasound should be performed after the next menstrual cycle or after one month [13]. A haemorrhagic cyst would resolve following the interval period, while an endometriotic cyst would persist or may even increase in size.…”

“…Pored toga, patolog je detektovao jedan 20mm MASIVNI corpus albicans, osam ekstraovarijalnih jednostavnih cisti 1-8mm, i 77 intraovarijalnih veličine 1-4mm. Zaključeno je da su male (≤ 5 mm), benigne adneksalne ciste i mali, benigni, solidni tumori toliko česti kod žena u postmenopauzi da se njihovo prisustvo može smatrati normalnim [3].…”
