The birthrate in Japan is declining rapidly, which is attributed to the lack of perspective and consideration for "child-rearing" in the architecture of cities. Therefore, to gain knowledge of the measures to support child-rearing, determining factors such as how urban space is used is essential. In this study, Japanese parents were requested to send pictures of their surrounding environment. The survey used the caption evaluation method to target naturally low-rise residential, planned residential, and mixed areas. On evaluation of the photographs, we found no regional differences in terms of safety and convenience. Despite the space created for walking, the parents actively enjoyed playing with the children. In the naturally low-rise residential areas, parents could select various routes. Conversely, the planned housing complexes did not have a wide choice of routes, limiting the play area. Therefore, a policy that incorporates this perspective is also necessary to improve the urban environment and consider the differences in each region to create an environment conducive to child-rearing.

This paper presents the formulation of facility location problem for the integration of two-kind facilities, in which plamiers seek optimal location or selection among er[isting two-kind old type fatihties for emerging new type facilities that minimize users' travel distance to closest servlce outlets, The model is applied to the unification of excessiye kindergartens and insuMcient nurseries. The model can yield optirnal combinations of two-kind fhcilities that are suitable for conversion to new type facilities, given the changing geographical feature of supplyldemand for child education or care services.

The Observation of Sound Environment at Setting Childcare Scene Focused on Children's Learning Activity

This study is a report of the result of investigating the sound environment at setting childcare scene in nursery institutions focused on children's learning activity aiming to make the acoustic environment as their learning field. By the behavioral observation and the sound field analysis at activity scene, we observed the characteristic of sound field at each study scene and the change of the acoustic environment when the teacher was setting the learning environment. The result shows that the sound by the children's behavior was a keynote source at dynamic activity scene like singing and dancing. Especially, the level of 1-2kHz band by children's voice and low frequency sound was characteristic. And for making settled space that was attached weight in young children's educational field, teachers often used the sound factor by the setting environment scene and a moderate silence was a very important environmental factor. For acoustic design according to the educational purpose, many-sided investigation of the sound space was essential to understand the teacher's setting behavior and children's behavioral pattern.
