Management and survival rates in patients with glioma in China (2004–2010): a retrospective study from a single-institution

Abstract: To analyze the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors in patients with glioma in an academic institute in China. From October 2004 to August 2010, total 1,285 patients were diagnosed as glioma at the Glioma Center of Beijing Tiantan Hospital. Clinical and molecular pathology features and survival rates were analyzed. The median overall survival (OS) times were 78.1, 37.6 and 14.4 months for low-grade glioma (WHO grade II), anaplastic glioma (WHO grade III) and glioblastoma (WHO grade IV), respectively… Show more

“…During tumor development, mutations and deletions of PTEN occur that inactivate its enzymatic activity leading to increased cell proliferation and reduced cell death. Frequent genetic inactivation of PTEN occurs in glioblastoma (83,84), endometrial cancer (85), and prostate cancer (86), and reduced expression is found in numerous other tumor types such as lung (87) and breast cancer (88).…”

“…Even using multiple modalities of treatment, including maximal safe resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, the prognosis of patients with malignant gliomas remains dismal (1,2). Therefore, novel therapeutic strategies and drugs for treatment of malignant gliomas are urgently required.…”

“…8,13 Associations have been made that link tumor location and genetic features in glioma. For example, anatomic characteristics have been demonstrated for several tumor-related molecular bio-markers, such as 1p and/or 19q, 14 isocitrate dehydrogenase 1,15 O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), 16 and…”
