Management and Complications of Short Bowel Syndrome: an Updated Review

Abstract: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is defined as loss of bowel mass from surgical resection, congenital defects, or disease. Intestinal failure (IF) includes the subset of SBS unable to meet nutrition needs with enteral supplements and requires parenteral nutrition (PN). The parenteral treatment of SBS is now a half-century old. Recent pharmacologic treatment (GLP-2 analogues) has begun to make a significant impact in the care and ultimate management of these patients such that the possibility of reducing PN requireme… Show more

“…Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a malabsorption disorder as a result of the loss of a large part of the bowel due to surgical resection, congenital defects or disease resulting in a remaining intestinal length of less than 200 cm . The diminished intestinal surface area impedes absorption and, thus, causes the dehydration and malnutrition with micronutrients and macronutrients of patients with SBS which cannot always be overcome with enteral supplements .…”

“…Short bowel syndrome (SBS) has been defined as loss of bowel or enterocyte mass from surgical resection, congenital defects, or disease. 1 In adults, most cases occur as a consequence of massive small bowel resection due to postoperative complications, mesenteric vascular disease, Crohn's disease, and trauma. 2 The remaining small intestine lacks sufficient surface area and functional capacity to fully digest and absorb nutrients, resulting in frequent dependency on parenteral nutrition (PN).…”
