Managed-Pressure Drilling – Recent Experience, Potential Efficiency Gains, and Future Opportunities

Abstract: Recent development of Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) Techniques for use from floating drilling rigs began in the late 1990's concurrent with the development of 5th generation offshore drilling vessels(1). During this period a number of industry efforts focused on developing "riserless" or dual gradient drilling systems employing subsea mud return pumping system. One of these efforts (2) culminated with the drilling of a test well in the Gulf of Mexico employing a subsea pump based Dual Gradient drilling metho… Show more

“…Similarly, resistance of the valve chamber might be the primary cause, because the mathematical calculation considers the flow area only and all other structures in the throttle valve are ignored. Based on the −Δ results, V curves under the three flow rates could be obtained with formula (1). V curves should be almost the same if the experiment is scientific and rational and they will be used to judge the throttling characteristics of the new valve core and the proper working conditions.…”

“…Throttle valve works as a fluid velocity regulator and a wellhead pressure controller in managed pressure drilling (MPD) [1,2]. Valve core is the key component in throttle valve because it is in direct contact with the drilling fluid and can adjust the flow area ( Figure 1).…”

“…In order to verify feasibility of the theory model of annular flow electromagnetic measurement system, a finite element model was built based on the fundamental equations of electromagnetic flowmeters, as described in equation (2). These differential equation could be solved using a contemporary computational method with proper boundary conditions, which we discussed previously in the theory model.…”

“…If not controlled, it may lead to a blowout. Therefore, detection of the early kick is crucial to control the formation pressure and minimize the possibility of a blowout occurring [2]. The conventional method of identifying the kick is based on the surface observation of the mud tank level, and this method has two main weak points.…”

“…As a new technology of oil drilling, the managed pressure drilling (MPD) can realize precise control in the whole drilling, pipe connection, and tripping processes by controlling the surface casing pressure, and it has become an effective way to alleviate these complicated situations previously mentioned [1,2]. As one of the key equipment to achieve precise control of the wellhead back pressure in MPD, the throttle valve can be used to control the bottom hole pressure by adjusting the opening size of throttle valve to form different throttle pressures [3,4].…”
