Managed Lane as Strategy for Traffic Flow and Safety: A Case Study of Catania Ring Road

Abstract: According to international traffic statistics, the quantity of daily traveling vehicles amounts to one billion, and it is estimated that in 2050 that amount will reach four billion. Urban population is growing especially in large metropolitan areas. This increase has different outgrowths concerning regular circulation, safety, and climatic perspectives. Therefore, the present and further increase of traffic flow is affecting the operational and safety performance of several roadway categories. Urban ring roads… Show more

“…Besides, implementing smart systems through nanotechnology can provide opportunities for revising traffic flows as well as the safety issues of roadways. Through nanoscale devices and sensory equipment placement in transportation systems, engineers can initiate smart systems with dynamic responses to fluctuating conditions, which in turn ensures better overall traffic system performance and reliability (Cafiso et al, 2022). Nanoteched-based smart infrastructure facilities contribute not only to the resilience and adaptability of the road networks, but also to ensure safer and more efficient transportation operations.…”

“…For example, the present and further increase in traffic flow is affecting the operational and safety performance of roadways. In accordance with international traffic statistics, the number of daily traveling vehicles amounts to one billion and will reach four billion in 2050 [ 1 ]. Hence, automotive safety has become a very critical issue.…”

“…Intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) aim at making reliable, efficient, and protected transportation systems by integrating smart transportation management and control systems through communication networks and computing techniques [ 1 ]. Reliable and efficient traffic signals save lives by bypassing incidents and responding to emergency vehicles so that they can meet the target response time [ 2 , 3 ]. Traffic controllers control the traffic signals dynamically based on the traffic conditions derived from wirelessly collected sensor data.…”
