The open road is popularly imagined as both cinematic and male, a space suited to the scope afforded by the cinema and the breadth demanded by the male psyche. However, while these connotations are ingrained within the aesthetics of driving, its kinaesthetics – the articulations between bodies, movement and space – have more in common with television and with stories of women’s desire. Drawing from Iris Marion Young’s theories of gendered embodiment, this article argues that driving, television and female desire are all marked by the same contradictions between movement and stability, and between public and private. It analyses two recent television programmes concerned with women behind the wheel – Black Mirror’s ‘San Junipero’ (Netflix, 2016) and the first two seasons of Big Little Lies (HBO, 2017–present) – to argue that driving on television affords a space through which to negotiate feminine embodiment, agency and desire.

EARLY 3 DECADES HAVE PASSED SINCE FOOTE N and Stewart described the mammary tumor which they designated lobular carcinoma.11 Once regarded as a pathologist's curiosity, information concerning this cancer has been slow to accumulate. I n the past 5 years, more than 400 additional cases have been reported, and new information has come to light concerning the natural history of the disease. This information has significant therapeutic implications in the management of the early phases of lobular carcinoma. It is the purpose in presenting this paper to summarize present knowledge of the disease with emphasis on the recent developments. DEFINITIONT h e original definition of lobular carcinoma is mammary carcinoma arising in lobules and terminal ducts.11 T h e in-situ form is confined to the site of origin, that is, the lobules and the terminal ducts, and the infiltrating form has spread outside these structures. T h e rationale for the designation "lobular" rather than "acinar" carcinoma has been discussed by Dawson,6s 7 Foote and Stewart11 and others. It is conceded that "lobule" is a more appropriate term for the terminal glandular elements in the nonlactating breast, since the term "acinus" implies an actively secreting (i.e., lactating) structure.T h e question of terminology of this cancer when it occurs in postmenopausal women has been raised.
