We report on the occurrence of Choeroniscus godmani (Thomas, 1903) in Brazil and Panama. The Panama record fills a distribution gap for the species in Central America. The three records from Brazil are from the Amazonia in the state of Pará, and from the Cerrado and an Amazonia/Cerrado ecotone in the state of Mato Grosso. At two localities in Brazil, C. minor, a larger species of Choeroniscus, was also recorded. These new records extend the distribution of C. godmani by 2,065 km south to central South America. One of the Brazilian specimens represents the first record of supernumerary incisors in C. godmani.

Densidad poblacional y organización social del primate endémico y críticamente amenazado <i>Plecturocebus caquetensis</i> (Pitheciidae) en el Piedemonte Andino-Amazónico del Cauca, Colombia

Con un área de distribución de tan solo 4029 km2 y endémica del Piedemonte Andino-Amazónico de los departamentos colombianos de Caquetá y Cauca, Plecturocebus caquetensis ha sido considerado uno de los 25 primates más amenazados del mundo. A la fecha, sólo existen datos de su demografía y ecología para poblaciones en el departamento del Caquetá, en tanto que, para la baja Bota Caucana, región que contiene los bosques mejor conservados para su distribución, aún no se evalúan estos atributos. Mediante el método de muestreo por distancias con transectos lineales, estudiamos la organización social y estimamos la densidad poblacional de P. caquetensis en bosques aluviales con diferentes grados de intervención antrópica y conectividad. Para 263 hectáreas de bosque, se estimó una densidad de 12,5 individuos/ km2 y 5,3 grupos/ km2. Se registraron 56 individuos en 22 grupos, el tamaño promedio fue de 2,5 individuos/grupo, el 80 % de los individuos fueron adultos, 16,4 % juveniles y 3,6 % subadultos. La densidad registrada es baja con respecto a estimaciones realizadas en un bosque inundable de aguas negras en el departamento del Caquetá y coincide con los registrados para bosques de lomerío. Se genera un insumo para la formulación de futuras investigaciones y estrategias de conservación pertinentes al contexto socio ambiental y cultural de la baja Bota Caucana.

Indigenous knowledge is a potentially important source of natural history information about unstudied species of large Amazonian mammals. The Matses, a Panoan-speaking tribe that lives in the basin of the Río Yavarí in northeastern Peru and western Brazil, retain intact traditional knowledge of the local fauna and flora. Our interviews with Matses hunters provide a rich source of original observations about Dasypus kappleri, the greater long-nosed armadillo, which we analyzed for accuracy and content by comparing items of Matses natural history information with the scientific literature. Of 66 items about this species gleaned from eight interviews, only 14 items (21%) overlapped substantively with information in the literature, which corroborated the accuracy of 13 items (93% accuracy, as assessed by this method). On the single point of disagreement between the literature and our interview results, it seems highly likely that the literature is incorrect. The remaining 52 Matses observations about the natural history of D. kappleri contain novel information about many aspects of the behavior, diet, and predators of this large and abundant but hitherto virtually unstudied xenarthran species.
