“…We collected presence records for elephants within the SYR population during the past 2 decades, which we subdivided into 2000-2010 and 2011-2020. Records from the earlier period included published data collected between 2000 and 2010 (Feng and Zhang 2005;Zhang 2006;Wang et al 2007;Lin et al 2008Lin et al , 2011Lin et al , 2014Yang and Zhang 2012), while the presence data from the later period was derived from post-2010 published records (Zong et al 2014, Li et al 2017, Bai et al 2018, genetic capture-mark-recapture sampling, and motion-sensitive camera surveys. We spent 4 months from December 2015 to March 2016 searching for fresh years according to equipment, manpower, and funding.…”

“…We chose the camera locations by following trails used by elephants and placed cameras at sites with abundant signs of elephants (footprints, feces, scrubs, feeding sites, or sleeping signs), and (as far as possible) distant from human activity in areas with gentle slopes, ranging in altitude from 600 m to 1,700 m. We retrieved images at monthly intervals. Further details of camera deployment are provided by Bai et al (2018) and Yang et al (2018). We did not include elephant-presence locations extracted from human-elephant conflict incidents, such as those available in Chen et al (2016), because we intended to model the extent of suitable natural habitat without the bias introduced by a high proportion of occurrence points in cropland where temporary food resources lure elephants (Lin et al 2015).…”

“…Nevertheless, this represents the first confirmed record of the species in China in 45 years. Other recent reports of sun bears in China (Zhou et al 2017, Bai et al 2018 were misidentifications of Asiatic black bears. Sun bears were thought to be extirpated in Bangladesh, with the exception of a few vagrants from neighboring countries (Islam et al 2013), until confirmed records (dead animals and camera-trap photos) were obtained in the Chittagong Hill Tracts during 2014-2016, including a female and cub (Anwarul Islam, WildTeam, personal communication 2015;Creative Conservation Alliance 2016;Hasan Rahman, personal communication, 2017).…”

“…From 1972 to 1990, humans and elephants frequently made contact [12]. From 1991 to 1995, the conflict between humans and elephants intensified [13]. From 1996 to 2005, Asian elephants were strictly protected, but serious accidents also occurred [14].…”
