Maltrato en la vejez: caracterización y prevalencia en la población mexicana

Abstract

Between 8.1% and 18.6% of older persons in Mexico are estimated to suffer ill-treatment, with this figure perhaps as high as 30% among those who rely on permanent care. As the population ages and life expectancy increases, the number of older persons suffering ill-treatment could also increase. This work aims to provide a diagnostic of ill-treatment of older persons in the family environment on the basis of the Survey on Health and Life Experiences of Older Persons 2018-2020, carried out in Mexico City and Xalapa (State of Veracruz). One of the study's main conclusions is that older women and older men are equally affected by ill-treatment. However, there are differences by sex with respect to the type of ill-treatment, the number of types of ill-treatment suffered simultaneously, the frequency of ill-treatment and party responsible for it.
