Mallomonas Camerunensis Sp. Nov. (Chrysophyceae, Stramenopiles) From A Shallow Puddle In The Guineo-Congolian Rainforest (Cameroon)

Abstract: Abstract.A new silica-scaled chrysophyte species, Mallomonas camerunensis J. Piątek, is described and illustrated from a shallow puddle in the Guineo-Congolian rainforest in Cameroon. This species belongs to section Papillosae and series Papillosa. differs from them in several morphological characters warranting recognition as a distinct species. The dome of M. camerunensis is clearly delimited and ornamented with papillae and ribs. The scales lack an anterior submarginal rib, while the posterior rim and V-rib… Show more

“…In particular, the literature on the tropical region, including its Asian distribution, is quite limited [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. Studies of the tropical region often describe many new species, most of which are endemic [24,25,[30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38]. Specialized research of synuralean algae in Vietnam began in 2008 [39].…”

“…Recently, two of such morphologically unusual M. rasilis morphotypes were described as new species. The first is M. camerunensis Piątek, found in Cameroon, Africa (Piątek ). Main distinctive features of this taxon are ribs on the dome and numerous papillae on the shield of scales.…”

“…Recently, four additional species were described from the tropics (Gusev ; Gusev et al. ; Piątek ). However, the genetic diversity as well as the relationship among the taxa within the section are poorly known, as only two species ( Mallomonas kalinae Řezáčová and Mallomonas papillosa Harris & Bradley) have been molecularly characterized up to now.…”

“…Piątek (2015), which belongs to the series Papillosa Asmund & Kristiansen (1986). As pointed out by Němcová and Kreidlová (2013), even though records of new Mallomonas species are continuously published, it seems that the number of species and their distribution may be underestimated.…”
