Malignant tumors of the uterine corpus: molecular background of their origin

Abstract: Tumors of the uterine corpus can be divided into two main groups: endometrial tumors and mesenchymal tumors. The former ones are common gynecological diseases, whereas malignant mesenchymal tumors, which behave in a much more aggressive way, are quite rare with a poorer prognosis. The most common type of endometrial tumors is endometrioid adenocarcinomas, and in case of mesenchymal tumors, these are carcinosarcomas, or leiomyosarcomas, if only clear types of tumors are taken into account. The objective of this… Show more

“…The body of the uterus is composed of a mucosa muscular interface derived from the Müllerian embryonic ducts and constituted of internal endometrium and external myometrium (MM) tissue layers [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. The internal endometrium is composed of luminal epithelium, glandular epithelium, and endometrial stroma whereas the MM consists mainly of smooth muscle cells [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Cellular and molecular alterations in the endometrial stroma and smooth muscle cell layers can lead to uterine sarcoma (US) development [ 4 , 5 , 6 ].…”

“…Uterus cancer can be divided into two main groups, including endometrial and mesenchymal malignancies [ 14 ]. Endometrial cancers are common and mesenchymal malignancies are rare with a poorer prognosis [ 14 ]. Cervical cancer has decreased due to vaccination, screening, early detection and treatment of cervical dysplasia or pre-invasive cancers [ 15 ].…”

“…The former are common gynaecological diseases, whereas the latter manifest more aggressively and are rarer with worse prognosis than the former. Endometrioid adenocarcinomas and carcinosarcomas or leiomyosarcomas, considering clear types of tumours alone, are the most common types of endometrial tumours and mesenchymal tumours, respectively [1].…”
