Malignant Transformation and Associated Biomarkers of Ovarian Endometriosis: A Narrative Review

Abstract: This review focuses on pathogenesis of endometriosis, its possible biomarkers and role in endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer. We analyzed various databases to obtain new insights, theories, and biomarkers associated with endometriosis. There are several theories of endometriosis development and biomarker changes including atypical forms. A number of studies have attempted to establish specific, reliable biomarkers to help diagnose endometriosis and endometriosis-associated diseases on the basis of differe… Show more

“…EOVC arising from endometriosis was not statistically significant as an independent prognostic factor, therefore, endometriosis may be a possible precursor of EOVC but is not a factor that exacerbates cancer after its onset ( 33 ). Patients with endometriosis can be divided into several groups according to malignancy risk and there are schemes and principles used to categorize patients: ROMA (risk of ovarian malignancy algorithm), RMI (risk of malignancy index), and IOTA (International Ovarian Tumor Analysis simple rules) which are based on serum biomarkers, BMI and ultrasound findings ( 34 ).…”

“…Notably, the rate of recurrence in endometriosis ranges between 30 and 50% ( 3 , 4 ). In addition, numerous studies exist on the recurrence of endometriosis, which, in some instances, leads to malignant transformation to ovarian cancer ( 5 ) and reoperation. Moreover, reoperation after the recurrence of endometriosis, often damages the remaining ovarian function, causes menstrual abnormalities, amenorrhea, infertility, and an increase in costs; hence, open surgery and definite surgery (e.g., total abdominal hysterectomy bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy) may be required.…”

“…MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. They bind to 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR) of target mRNAs and negatively control gene translation or cause mRNA degradation [ 4 ]. It has been proven that miRNAs play a significant role in various biological processes, including the cell cycle, proliferation, differentiation, and cell apoptosis.…”
