Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma with a Sarcomatoid Growth Pattern and Signet-Ring-Like Structure in a Female F344 Rat

Abstract: We report a biphasic malignant mesothelioma in an aged female F344/DuCrlCrlj rat. Macroscopically, multiple pale brown nodules were observed in the abdominal cavity with retention of bloody ascites. Histopathologically, the tumor cells spread over the peritoneum and formed masses on the surface and underlying adipose tissues. The tumor cells dominantly proliferated in a solid, nodular or nest-like pattern with modest amount of fibrillar connective tissues, which contained hyaluronan. The tumor consisted of ovo… Show more

“…Surgery [27,37], ketotifen [82], azathioprine [16], sodium chromoglycate and montelukast [7,66] as monotherapy or in combination with corticosteroids were successfully used while treating relapses. Six patients required long-term steroid therapy [29,40,53,[83][84][85].…”

“…Key features seem to be the occurrence of vimentin in the majority of mesotheliomas [ 23 , 24 ], a marker for mesenchymal cells and mesothelium, wide-spectrum cytokeratin [ 25 - 27 ] as a marker for epithelial cells and mesothelium, and positivity for podoplanin [ 28 - 31 ], which is a marker for lymphatic endothelium. These markers were also observed in mesotheliomas of rats [ 32 ].…”

“…Interestingly, pleural mesotheliomas in humans can exhibit immunoreactivity for WT1 25 . In comparison, mesothelial cells from malignant mesotheliomas in F344 rats are immunoreactive for mesothelin, podoplanin, vimentin, and pancytokeratins 26 , 27 . Electron microscopy (EM) can be beneficial in the diagnosis of nephroblastomas but is not always essential due to the speed and accuracy of immunohistochemical staining 28 .…”

“…Electron microscopy (EM) can be beneficial in the diagnosis of nephroblastomas but is not always essential due to the speed and accuracy of immunohistochemical staining 28 . When EM is completed it can aid in the diagnosis of nephroblastomas as neoplastic epithelial and blastemal cells exhibit junctional complexes and microvilli, are partially surrounded by basement membrane, and lack cytoplasmic vacuoles 4 , 26 .…”
