Background. In the last years an uprising interest for a relatively unknown entity, eosinophilic ascites (EA), has been recorded. Our aim is to investigate the potential causes of EA development, as well as clinical, laboratory, endoscopic and radiologic features, management and outcome in these patients. Methods. The following research was performed on PubMed (MEDLINE) database using the medical subject headings [Mesh] terms “Ascites” AND “Eosinophils”. Results. A total of 284 results, dating from 1962 onwards, were found and abstracts were examined. 131 papers were excluded and the remaining 153 publications, consisting in case reports and series of cases, were analyzed. From 171 patients with EA, 127 subjects (74%) had EGE, 17 (10%) parasitic and fungal infections, 11(7%) Hypereosinophilic syndrome and 16 patients (9%) less common diseases (eosinophilic pancreatitis, chronic eosinophilic leukemia, myelofibrosis, T-cell lymphoma, Churg Strauss Syndrome, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Familial paroxysmal polyserositis and Ménétrier’s disease). High eosinophil blood count and IgE levels as well as gastrointestinal symptoms are frequent. The diagnosis is based on ascitic fluid analysis, imaging and endoscopic biopsies. Therapy with corticosteroids results in resolution of eosinophilic ascites in almost all patients. Conclusion. In most cases, in the absence of allergy, parasitic infections, malignancy, hematological disorders, peritoneal tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease or autoimmune disease, EA develops as a manifestation of eosinophilic gastroenteritis.

BackgroundBiological effects of tailor-made multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) without functionalization were investigated in vivo in a two-year carcinogenicity study. In the past, intraperitoneal carcinogenicity studies in rats using biopersistent granular dusts had always been negative, whereas a number of such studies with different asbestos fibers had shown tumor induction. The aim of this study was to identify possible carcinogenic effects of MWCNTs. We compared induced tumors with asbestos-induced mesotheliomas and evaluated their relevance for humans by immunohistochemical methods.MethodsA total of 500 male Wistar rats (50 per group) were treated once by intraperitoneal injection with 109 or 5 × 109 WHO carbon nanotubes of one of four different MWCNTs suspended in artificial lung medium, which was also used as negative control. Amosite asbestos (108 WHO fibers) served as positive control. Morbid rats were sacrificed and necropsy comprising all organs was performed. Histopathological classification of tumors and, additionally, immunohistochemistry were conducted for podoplanin, pan-cytokeratin, and vimentin to compare induced tumors with malignant mesotheliomas occurring in humans.ResultsTreatments induced tumors in all dose groups, but incidences and times to tumor differed between groups. Most tumors were histologically and immunohistochemically classified as malignant mesotheliomas, revealing a predominantly superficial spread on the serosal surface of the abdominal cavity. Furthermore, most tumors showed invasion of peritoneal organs, especially the diaphragm. All tested MWCNT types caused mesotheliomas. We observed highest frequencies and earliest appearances after treatment with the rather straight MWCNT types A and B. In the MWCNT C groups, first appearances of morbid mesothelioma-bearing rats were only slightly later. Later during the two-year study, we found mesotheliomas also in rats treated with MWCNT D – the most curved type of nanotubes. Malignant mesotheliomas induced by intraperitoneal injection of different MWCNTs and of asbestos were histopathologically and immunohistochemically similar, also compared with mesotheliomas in man, suggesting similar pathogenesis.ConclusionWe showed a carcinogenic effect for all tested MWCNTs. Besides aspect ratio, curvature seems to be an important parameter influencing the carcinogenicity of MWCNTs.

Anaplastic nephroblastoma with peritoneal metastasis in an adult female Sprague Dawley rat

Spontaneous nephroblastomas are uncommon tumors of laboratory rats. This report describes a spontaneous nephroblastoma with peritoneal metastasis in an 11-month-old, female Sprague Dawley rat. The rat was part of a breeding program and presented 15 days post parturition with clinical signs including tachypnea, dyspnea and abdominal distension. At necropsy, the right kidney was markedly enlarged by an expansile pale-tan to white multinodular mass with extension into the retroperitoneal space, with multifocal variably sized cystic nodules involving the mesentery, and surface of pancreas, liver, uterus, and ovarian bursa. The rat also had severe bicavitary effusion. Histologically, the renal parenchyma of the affected kidney was replaced by a moderately cellular, poorly-demarcated, nonencapsulated, multilobulated mass that appeared to compress the adjacent renal outer medulla and cortex. Three distinct neoplastic cell populations were identified in this renal tumor: epithelial cells (convoluted and dilated tubules / rare primitive glomeruloid structures), mesenchymal (neoplastic spindle cells in connective tissue), and blastemal cells (primitive neoplastic cells). The extrarenal nodular masses were predominantly composed of neoplastic mesenchymal and pleomorphic blastemal cells. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic epithelial cells in the renal mass were positive for pancytokeratin, and blastemal cells in both renal and extrarenal masses were positive for Wilms tumor 1 protein (WT1) and vimentin. Neoplastic mesenchymal elements in both renal and extrarenal masses were positive for vimentin. The neoplasm was negative for chromogranin A and S100. The tumor was classified as an anaplastic nephroblastoma with metastasis to the mesentery and peritoneal organs.
