Malignant otitis externa due to Staphylococcus infection

Abstract: A case of malignant otitis externa occurring in a fit 25-year-old non-diabetic male is reported. The clinical and histological findings support this diagnosis but neither identification nor culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was made and the condition was bilateral. The only pathogen identified was Staphylococcus aureus which has been reported in only two previous cases.

“…Other bacterial organisms that have also been associated areStaphylococcus aureus [17,18], especially MRSA, Staphylococci epidermidis [19], Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella oxytoca [20,21]. Pseudomonas aeuruginosa is an obligate gram negative aerobe that tends to colonize in a moist external auditory canal especially in indivisuals with impaired immunity; whereas Staphylococci, Proteus and Klebsiella are not true pathogens but commensals.…”

Allerdings sind in Abweichung von der Definition der Erkrankung auch Fälle bei Nichtdiabetikern mit Immundefekten beobachtet worden [1,29,30].…”
