Malignant Mesothelioma Mortality in the United States, 1999–2001

Abstract: Malignant mesothelioma is strongly associated with asbestos exposure. This paper describes demographic, geographic, and occupational distributions of mesothelioma mortality in the United States, 1999-2001. The data (n = 7,524) were obtained from the National Center for Health Statistics multiple-cause-of-death records. Mortality rates (per million per year) were age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population, and proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) were calculated by occupation and industry, and adjusted … Show more

“…To construct immunoliposomes, (scFv) 2 were reduced with 20 mmol/L mercaptoethylamine, purified using a Sephadex G-25 gel filtration column, and eluted with HEPES-buffered saline [5 mmol/L HEPES, 145 mmol/L NaCl, 3.4 mmol/L EDTA (pH 7.0)]. To create an active surface for conjugation, micellar solutions of h-(N-maleimido)propionyl polyethylene glycol-1,2-distearoyl-3-sn-phosphoethanolamine were inserted into liposomes by incubation at 60jC for 30 min at the ratio of 0.5 mol % of the liposomal phospholipids (34).…”

“…Although the exact cause of this disease is unknown, there is a strong association with exposure to asbestos (1,2). Despite this knowledge, exposure to asbestos continues due to disturbance of naturally occurring asbestos and asbestos used in existing buildings.…”

“…125 The mortality from asbestos-related lung cancer is estimated to be even greater; the ratio of deaths from lung cancer to mesothelioma is at least 1 : 1 and has been suggested to be as high as 7 : 1. 126 The epidemic of asbestoscaused disease in workers persists outside of the United States as well; the annual number of cancer deaths attributable to asbestos in workers worldwide is estimated to be 100 000-140 000.…”

“…Reports show that the incidence of MPM is increasing globally, with 2000 new cases annually in the United States (1) . Increased incidence of mesothelioma is strongly associated with exposure to asbestos, which is most commonly used in Western industrial societies; more men than women are affected (2) .…”
