Malignant Mesothelioma: Has Anything Changed?

Abstract: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare cancer associated with asbestos exposure and portends a dismal prognosis. Its worldwide incidence has been increasing, and treatment options are currently suboptimal and noncurative. However, since the turn of the century, several encouraging steps have been made toward improving outcomes for mesothelioma patients. An increased understanding of disease pathophysiology has led to more accurate diagnosis and staging, and the establishment of the standard of care first-lin… Show more

“…This multidrug chemotherapy may indeed have immunosuppressive effects by affecting essential components of host immunity. On the contrary, the new regimen may induce immunogenic cell death and improve immunotherapy based on immune checkpoint inhibitors [ 41 , 42 ]. The rationale of this combinatorial approach is supported by accumulating evidence indicating that chemotherapy regulates the composition and function of tumor infiltrating lymphoid and myeloid cells [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…Doll et al, have linked the lung cancer diagnosis of a group of workers with their past asbestos exposure [6]. It has been well established that exposure to mineral fibers such as asbestos and erionite is the main cause of MPM [7]. Asbestos is the commercial umbrella term for six types of naturally occurring silicate fibers, all of which have been considered as carcinogenic to humans by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) [8].…”
