Malignant Melanoma in a Hispanic Male with Nevus of Ota

Abstract: Nevus of Ota is uncommon in the non-Oriental population. We report a case of malignant melanoma with metastasis to the genitourinary tract in a Hispanic male with nevus of Ota. Thirty-six prior cases of nevus of Ota with malignant melanoma reported in the English language are reviewed. Sixty-eight percent were women; 76% were Caucasians. “…There are two main complications associated with naevus of Ota: (i) glaucoma 5 as a result of the development of an infiltrate of melanocytes in the iridocorneal angle in 10.3% of cases, and (ii) malignancy, which is rare in Asians. Shaffer et al 6 . commented that of 37 cases of naevus of Ota reported in the English literature, 76% were Caucasians.…”

“…Therefore, the calculated incidence of malignant melanoma associated with the nevus of Ota is 0.001–0.005% (0.2–1.0%×0.5%) among East Asians, whereas it is 0.01% (0.04×25%) among western populations. Malignant melanoma associated with nevus of Ota has been reported to occur in the uveal tract 6, optic nerve head 7, brain, and orbit. As for western populations, Rice and Brown 8 reported finding six cases of primary orbital melanoma associated with nevus of Ota, whereas two other studies have additionally reported two more cases 1,9.…”

“…Nevus of Ota is widely considered to be a benign dermal melanocytic nevus, but malignant melanoma arising in patients with nevus of Ota has been reported occasionally, mainly in Caucasians. 13 Thus, a question arose as to whether repeated laser damage would increase the risk of malignant transformation. In our study, malignant transformation was not found in any patient.…”
